The Borough of Tarentum is asking electric customers to voluntarily reduce electricity use today, Tuesday, September 1, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
During very hot days, electricity use can rise sharply across the entire regional power grid as homes, businesses, and industries operate air conditioning and other equipment at the same time. These periods of extremely high usage are known as peak demand periods.
For a municipal electric system like Tarentum’s, the amount of electricity our community uses during certain regional peak hours can help determine a portion of the Borough’s future power and transmission costs. Reducing our total electric demand during these limited periods can therefore help control future costs for the Borough’s electric system and its customers.
This practice is commonly called peak shaving. It simply means temporarily reducing unnecessary electric use during the hours when demand on the regional grid is expected to be highest.
Customers can help between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM today by:
• Raising your thermostat a few degrees, if comfortable and safe to do so
• Waiting until after 6:00 PM to run dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, or other large appliances
• Turning off unnecessary lights and electronics
• Delaying electric vehicle charging until later in the evening
• Businesses and larger electric customers reducing nonessential equipment or other electric loads where practical
Even small reductions by individual customers can add up when they occur across the entire community at the same time.
