Description
The Borough of Tarentum has received an updated opinion from its structural engineer regarding the partial building collapse at 411 Corbet Street.
After reviewing additional information and the property owner’s supplemental engineering report, the Borough’s engineer concurred with the recommended temporary stabilization and immediate public-safety measures. Based on those recommendations, the affected roads may reopen.
The reopening will include Corbet Street, East Fourth Avenue, and East Fifth Avenue in the affected area.
The sidewalks along East Fourth Avenue and beside 411 Corbet Street will remain closed until the required temporary enclosure and protective barrier are installed. Access to the area between 411 Corbet Street and the Manos building will also remain restricted.
On August 11, the Borough’s engineer will meet with representatives of the property owner and the owner’s engineer to evaluate the building and determine a timeline for repairing the damaged rear wall. Completion of that work is necessary before the Borough can determine whether the displaced residents may safely reoccupy the neighboring building.
The Borough will issue an alert as soon as the evacuation order has been lifted. Until that notification is issued, the evacuation order remains in effect.
The engineering determination allowing the roads to reopen addresses the immediate off-site hazard and permits the Borough to reduce the existing safety perimeter. It does not constitute approval to occupy 411 Corbet Street or a determination that the building is structurally sound. A comprehensive structural evaluation and additional corrective work remain necessary.
