Description
Major I-45 traffic change begins Saturday night in Galveston County
Drivers traveling through the Texas City Wye will face a major traffic change beginning Saturday night as part of the ongoing I-45 Gulf Freeway widening project.
Crews will permanently close the SH 146 westbound connector ramp to I-45 southbound at 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8. The ramp is being removed to make room for future I-45 main lanes that will be constructed in its current footprint.
The closure will force drivers coming from SH 146 to use new detour routes to reach southbound I-45. Passenger vehicles will be able to use a new U-turn lane at SH 6 or travel north on I-45 to FM 519, make a U-turn and then head south. Heavy trucks will be directed through FM 519 to access the southbound frontage road.
Drivers should also expect significant delays this weekend while crews make the traffic switch. Two southbound I-45 mainlanes between FM 519 and Tiki Drive will close from 9 p.m. Saturday until 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, leaving just one southbound lane open. The southbound entrance ramp from SH 6 will also close for striping.
