Description
GALVESTON COUNTY — Commuters heading to Galveston Island will soon face a permanent change to their daily drive as the massive I-45 expansion project advances through Galveston County.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has officially notified city officials of an upcoming traffic shift at the "Wye" interchange. Beginning July 31 after 9:00 p.m., crews will shift the southbound mainlanes of I-45 onto the southbound frontage road, just south of State Highway 6 (SH 6).

This major shift necessitates the permanent closure of the westbound SH 146 to southbound I-45 connector ramp.

To navigate the closure, TxDOT has established the following detour route:

* Traffic must turn right onto the I-45 northbound frontage road.

* Merge onto the northbound mainlanes of I-45.

* Exit at FM 519.

* Make a U-turn at FM 519 to enter the southbound mainlanes of I-45.

Commercial Vehicle Advisory: Trucks with trailers and 18-wheelers cannot use the designated U-turn lane at FM 519. Instead, large commercial vehicles must make a standard left turn onto FM 519, followed by another left turn to access the I-45 southbound frontage road.

Please be prepared and patient as this next phase begins.
