Description
The Luzerne Conservation District has confirmed that adult mosquito samples in Wyoming Borough have tested positive for West Nile Virus. Positive samples have also been detected in West Pittston Borough. Larval and adult surveillance are ongoing to help monitor and control the mosquito population.
To help protect the community, residents are strongly encouraged to eliminate standing water on their properties and take personal precautions to prevent mosquito bites.
Key Actions Residents Can Take:
Eliminate Standing Water: Regularly empty bird baths, tires, flowerpot saucers, buckets, and clogged gutters. Mosquitoes can breed in stagnant water in as little as 4 days!
Limit Peak Exposure: Avoid or limit outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours from dusk to dawn.
Cover Up & Protect: Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors, and apply an EPA-registered insect repellent containing at least 30% DEET.
Please review the attached flyer from the Luzerne Conservation District for more helpful tips on staying safe this mosquito season.
