Thank you Alderman Sukal for the following update:
I wanted to share update from the council meeting 2/24/2026 for those who could no make it regarding the ongoing TXDOT project impacting our community.
Estimated Completion: 2030
This is a phased, multi-year infrastructure project running through 2030.
Schedule Overview:
• 2026 – Traffic lane switch
• 2027 – Start of new Texas City Wye intersection
• 2028 – FM 519 overpass completion
• 2029 – FM 519 at Lakeside
• 2030 – Full corridor completion from Galveston to FM 519
Currently, frontage roads from 519 to the Texas City Wye are approximately 85% complete.
TXDOT will reroute traffic to the frontage roads to begin work on the main lanes. Once rerouted, there should be three lanes in both directions on the frontage roads.
Drainage & Construction
TXDOT is reviewing drainage during construction as phases progress. This includes evaluating runoff and water flow patterns near ramps and underpasses.
Resident Concerns Raised
Communicated the following concerns to TXDOT:
• Northbound I-45 on-ramp when exiting BV to head North
• Water accumulation near the underpass
• Hurricane evacuation flow and capacity
Regarding the northbound on-ramp onto Interstate 45, concerns include limited merge distance, high-speed traffic, and water runoff during heavy rain. We have asked for review of safety standards, drainage, and possible signage improvements.
Sound Wall
There will not be a sound wall installed as part of this project.
