Benefits of tar and chip paving
Tar and chip paving, also known as chip seal, offers several benefits as a roadway surface:
Cost-effectiveness
• Tar and chip is generally more affordable than asphalt or concrete, as it utilizes fewer refined materials and requires less specialized equipment.
• It serves as a cost-effective alternative to expensive paving or road surfacing services.
Low maintenance
• Unlike asphalt, tar and chip do not require frequent sealing to protect the surface and restore its appearance.
• Minor cracks tend to self-heal in hot weather, further reducing maintenance needs.
• Basic upkeep, such as occasional sweeping and washing, and prompt repair of potholes, is usually sufficient to maintain its appearance.
Improved traction and skid resistance
• The textured surface created by the embedded stone chips offers better traction than the smooth surface of asphalt.
• This feature enhances safety for both vehicles and pedestrians, especially in wet or icy conditions.
Durability
• The textured surface is generally more resistant to cracking than asphalt surfaces.
Environmental impact
• Tar and chip paving typically has a lower environmental impact than traditional asphalt paving because it utilizes less asphalt in the installation process.
• The materials used are often natural and recyclable, and the installation process generally creates less waste and requires fewer resources than asphalt or concrete driveways.
Efficient drainage
• The gravel in the mix helps promote water drainage, and the porous nature of the material helps prevent puddling and pooling of water on the roadway surface.
