Description
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced yesterday there will be some short-term closures today at the interim repair project for the Route 462 Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge spanning the Susquehanna River between Columbia in Lancaster County and Wrightsville in York County. This work previously was scheduled for last Thursday.
Weather permitting, starting at approximately 10:00 AM today, October 1, short-term closures of up to 15 minutes will be implemented on the bridge so the contractor can perform bridge jacking on the Wrightsville side of the structure. Delays are expected during the stoppage.
The interim repair project includes repairing bridge beams and strengthening select columns on the west (Wrightsville) half of the bridge.
Vehicle, bike, and pedestrian traffic currently not restricted from using the bridge will be maintained throughout the construction period.
Long-term lane shifts will be in place. One lane of traffic will be open in each direction on the bridge for much of this project. However, there also may be short-term closures and intermittent single lane restrictions under flagging, as needed.
Boaters can avoid under-bridge work locations by following signs placed on the side of the bridge.
CriLon Corp., of Somerset, PA, is the contractor on this $910,780 project. All work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
A 10-ton weight restriction currently is in place on the bridge. The restriction was implemented last year after a routine inspection uncovered deterioration to the primary load carrying members of the open spandrel concrete arch spans along portions of the bridge.
This restriction, which was implemented to reduce strain on the bridge and prevent further deterioration, will remain in place after the interim repairs are completed.
