Description
We have received reports of discolored brown water in some areas of town. This discoloration is due to the presence of Potassium Permanganate, a chemical commonly used in the water treatment process for disinfection and to remove iron, manganese, and other impurities. Potassium Permanganate is typically purple or pink, but under certain conditions, it can react with organic materials in the water, leading to a brownish color.
While this discoloration may be concerning, please rest assured that it is a normal part of the disinfection process and poses no health risks. The water remains safe to use and consume. If you notice brown water in your home, we recommend running your cold water taps for several minutes until the water clears. Avoid using hot water, as this may draw the discolored water into your hot water tank.
Thank you,
Tarentum Borough
