Description
Some helpful tips and reminders when navigating a roundabout.
Approaching the Roundabout
• Slow down: Reduce your speed as you approach the intersection.
• Watch for pedestrians: Yield to pedestrians crossing at the entry crosswalks.
• Choose your lane early: Look at overhead signs and pavement markings to pick the right lane for your destination before you get to the yield line:
• Turning right (first exit): Use the right-hand lane.
• Going straight (middle exit): Follow posted lane arrows.
• Turning left or making a U-turn (last/far exit): Use the left-hand lane.
Entering the Roundabout
• Look left and yield: Stop or yield at the line to any vehicles or cyclists already inside the roundabout. Traffic inside the circle has the right-of-way.
• Wait for a safe gap: Do not force your way in; merge smoothly when there is a clear opening in traffic.
• Travel counterclockwise: Drive to the right around the central island.
Inside and Exiting the Roundabout
• Stay in your lane: Do not change lanes while driving inside the circle.
• Do not stop inside: Never stop your vehicle while circulating unless it is required to avoid a collision.
• Signal before you exit: Turn on your right turn signal just as you pass the exit before the one you plan to take.
• Watch for crosswalks again: Check for pedestrians crossing the road as you exit.
• Missed your exit? Do not back up or stop. Simply go all the way around the circle again until your exit comes up.
