Description
In previous years, PennDOT would typically remove deer carcasses from along state roadways and transport them to a composting facility for disposal.

However, PennDOT’s ability to remove and dispose of deer carcasses has changed now that York County falls within the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s (PGC) Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) management area.

In CWD-affected areas, the PGC relies on specialized independent contractors to collect roadside deer carcasses for disease surveillance and proper handling and disposal.

Please refer the individual to PennDOT’s York County Maintenance Office at (717) 848-6230. PennDOT will coordinate with the PGC to arrange for a specialized contractor to collect the carcass.

For deer carcasses reported along municipal roadways, please refer the resident to contact the PGC at (833) 742-4868 to report the location and request removal. Carcasses are typically removed within 48 hours of being reported.
