🚨🔥 IMPORTANT NOTICE — LITHIUM BATTERIES ARE CAUSING FIRES AT OUR COUNTY LANDFILL! 🔥🚨
The City of Keiser is asking all residents to PLEASE STOP putting lithium batteries and items containing lithium batteries in your household trash!
These batteries are causing fires at our county landfill at an alarming rate! When lithium batteries are crushed, punctured, or damaged during trash collection or at the landfill, they can ignite and cause dangerous fires.
⚠️ Common household items containing lithium batteries include:
- Cell phones, tablets, and laptops
- Rechargeable power tools and batteries
- Electric toothbrushes and razors
- Wireless earbuds and headphones
- Rechargeable flashlights
- Battery-powered toys
- Portable chargers and power banks
- E-cigarettes and disposable vapes
- Some watches, key fobs, and small electronic devices
☠️ THESE FIRES ARE ALSO A SERIOUS HEALTH HAZARD!
When lithium batteries catch fire, they can release toxic fumes and hazardous gases into the air. These fumes can be dangerous to landfill employees, firefighters, nearby residents, and our environment. This is not just a landfill problem — it is a public health and safety concern that affects us all!
💰 THESE FIRES COULD COST ALL OF US!
Every landfill fire creates safety hazards, damages equipment, and increases operating expenses. If we cannot get these fires under control, our landfill disposal fees could increase, and those additional costs could ultimately be passed along to our residents through higher garbage rates.
♻️ WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT IT?
In the near future, the City of Keiser will be installing a battery disposal collection box at City Hall to give residents a convenient location to properly dispose of accepted household batteries.
Until that collection box is available, PLEASE DO NOT place lithium batteries or devices containing them in your household garbage! Keep undamaged batteries in a safe location away from heat and flammable materials until they can be taken to an approved battery collection facility. Damaged or swollen batteries require special handling.
🚒 Let's work together to prevent fires, protect our sanitation workers, reduce toxic fumes, safeguard our environment, and keep garbage collection costs under control.
A little extra effort from each household can make a BIG difference for our entire community!
