Description
Citizens of Taft, El Niño is a climate phenomenon characterized by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, which can influence global weather patterns for months. This El Niño is developing earlier and faster than usual, with a growing chance of evolving into a super El Niño by late 2026 or early 2027. This indicates a rainy season possibly in the months to come. This can mean hurricane level water at times, without the wind and damage. With this extra strain on our water drainage system from abnormal water usage, we need to remember to take care of our infrastructure. We all rely on our sewer system every day, and keeping it running smoothly is a shared responsibility.

Recent sewer system blockages caused by excessive rains were exacerbated by non-flushable items causing blockages. Even products labeled “flushable” can cause serious problems for your home’s plumbing and our community’s sewer lines. Listed are items that should never be flushed:

❌ DO NOT FLUSH:
Wipes (baby, cleaning, or “flushable” wipes)
Paper towels or tissues
Razor blades
Needles and syringes
Feminine hygiene products
Cotton balls, swabs, or dental floss
Toys
Grease, fats, or oils
Medications or chemicals

When these items go down the toilet, they can:
👉 Clog pipes in your home, leading to costly repairs
👉 Cause sewer backups into homes and streets
👉 Damage wastewater treatment equipment
👉 Harm our rivers, bays, and wildlife

✅ WHAT TO DO INSTEAD:
Place non-flushable items in the trash. For grease, pour it into a container, let it cool, and dispose of it in the garbage.

By working together, we can protect our homes, our environment, our wallets, and time spent on doing repairs. Our sewer systems are not designed to take an abnormal amount of rain complicated by blockages caused by non-flushable items. Thank you for doing your part to keep our sewer system healthy. 👍
