Description
Junior Council Person Program - Building the Leaders of Tomorrow
The newly created Junior Council Person Program offers New Freedom youth an opportunity to become actively engaged in borough government while developing leadership, communication, and civic responsibility skills.
Annually, in May of each year, New Freedom Borough seeks resumes from high school students to participate in the Junior Council Person Program. The program creates a meaningful mentorship opportunity, allowing borough officials to guide and encourage students who represent the next generation of community leaders.
Guidelines of the program:
*Must be a borough resident
*Must be entering Junior or Senior year of High School
*Must take an “oath of office”
*Must serve a one or two-year term to coincide with the school year
*Must attend monthly borough council meetings, budget sessions, and any other “special” meetings
*Must be seated on the council, participating in any and all business
*Must observe all borough council meeting rules
*Not permitted to vote or attend executive sessions
Any student interested in serving our community, please submit a letter of interest to Andrew Shaffer, Borough Manager, at manager@newfreedomboro.org by June 1 at noon. Applicants are encouraged to attend the Borough Council meeting on June 8, 2026 at 6:30 PM.
