Public Works Laborer – Job Description
The City of Stamford Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining and improving the City’s infrastructure and public spaces. The Public Works Laborer performs a variety of manual labor tasks in support of these operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Infrastructure Maintenance
* Perform construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, alleys, and drainage systems.
* Repair potholes, fill ditches, and remove debris.
* Assist with water and sewer line maintenance and repairs.
* Maintain and repair other public infrastructure as assigned.
**Grounds and Facilities Maintenance**
* Maintain city grounds, parks, rights-of-way, and other public properties, including mowing, trimming, and landscaping.
* Empty trash receptacles and collect/dispose of brush, debris, and waste.
* Perform general building maintenance and minor carpentry repairs for City facilities.
**Equipment Operation and Maintenance**
* Operate a variety of tools and equipment, including power tools (air compressors, chainsaws, lawnmowers) and heavy equipment (backhoes, dump trucks).
* Perform routine inspections and maintenance on equipment.
* Clean, maintain, and properly store tools and equipment.
**Safety and Public Interaction**
* Follow all safety policies and procedures.
* Maintain positive working relationships with coworkers and the public.
* Respond to work orders and emergency situations as directed.
**Minimum Requirements**
* High School diploma or GED equivalent.
* Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
* Ability to perform heavy manual labor in various weather conditions.
* Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
**Additional Duties and Requirements**
* Prior experience in construction, utilities, or municipal work is preferred.
* A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required or must be obtained within a specified timeframe after hire.
* Availability for after-hours emergency response (e.g., severe weather, flooding) may be required.
