When Should Residents Clear Sidewalks During a Snowstorm?
The Borough begins opening streets after the snow or ice event has fully ended, and this process takes a minimum of 8 hours.
Best Time to Shovel
Residents and businesses should wait until Public Works has finished plowing and cleaning the streets before clearing sidewalks or digging out vehicles. Shoveling too early—right when the storm stops—often leads to conflict, because plows may push snow back onto areas that were already cleared.
Digging Out Vehicles
When removing snow from vehicles, all snow must be placed at the curbline or on your own property.
Do NOT push or pile snow into the street or between parked cars.
This creates driving hazards.
It causes snowpack that becomes difficult to remove.
It can reduce the number of available parking spaces.
It creates additional obstacles if another snowstorm occurs.
Clearing Sidewalks
Wait until Public Works has finished plowing the street before shoveling or snow-blowing your sidewalk.
All sidewalk snow must remain on your property—both for residents and businesses.
Snow may not be placed in the street.
