Description
Winter Storm Warning issued January 24 at 7:57PM EST until January 26 at 7:00PM EST by NWS Binghamton NY
* WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 10
and 15 inches. Northwest winds gusting as high as 35 mph over the
higher elevations Monday afternoon may create areas of blowing
snow.
* WHERE...Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Southern Wayne, and Wyoming
Counties.
* WHEN...From 1 AM Sunday to 7 PM EST Monday.
* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Areas of
blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous
conditions could impact the Monday morning and evening commutes.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Snow will overspread Northeast PA between 4
AM and 7 AM Sunday morning, becoming steady by the mid-morning
hours on Sunday. Snowfall will likely be very heavy at times
Sunday afternoon into early Sunday evening with hourly rates
exceeding 2 inches per hour. Some sleet could mix in at times
Sunday evening, and the snow may become lighter with occasional
lulls as a few dry slots slide by the area. Overall, the snow
becomes light to occasionally moderate after midnight Sunday night
into early Monday morning. Occasional snow showers or flurries and
blowing snow then continue into Monday afternoon. Temperatures
will be very cold throughout this storm, hovering in the upper
single digits to teens the entire time, with colder wind chills.
Persons are urged to stay indoors until conditions improve. If you
must go outside, dress in layers. Several layers of clothes will
keep you warmer than a single heavy coat. Cover exposed skin to
reduce your risk of frostbite or hypothermia. Gloves, a scarf, and a
hat will keep you from losing your body heat.
Persons should consider delaying all travel if possible. If travel
is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared
for sudden changes in visibility. Leave plenty of room between you
and the motorist ahead of you, and allow extra time to reach your
destination. Avoid sudden braking or acceleration, and be especially
cautious on hills or when making turns. Make sure your car is
winterized and in good working order.
