Snow Emergency
New Salem Borough
News Release
January 23, 2026
New Salem Borough is declaring a Snow Emergency effective Saturday, January 24, 2026 at 8:00 pm until further notice. The snow emergency is being declared to help ensure the safety of our community by allowing plow trucks to clear and salt the roadways.
Main and George Streets are state roads and will be plowed by PennDOT. It is advised that you remove all parked vehicles from the roadway. The remainder of our roads are cleared by our contracted plowing company. With the amount of snow predicted, this may take some time. Please be patient. While we do not have an ordinance requiring cars/trailers be removed from the roadway during a snow storm, I'm asking, if possible, to park them in your driveway. This serves two purposes. One it makes snow removal more efficient and safer. Secondly, you only need to shovel the entrance to your driveway and not dig out your car as well. This means LESS WORK!
If there is a fire hydrant near your house, please consider removing the snow from around it.
By ordinance, sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours of the end of the snowfall. If a resident fails to do this, sidewalks may be cleared by the borough at the owner’s expense.
Our more mature citizens, or those with disabilities, could use a helping hand if we get the amount of snow that is forecast! More helping hands will make the task easier!
Thank you for your cooperation. Be safe!
