Description
Flood Watch issued January 3 at 1:31PM HST until January 5 at 6:00PM HST by NWS Honolulu HI

...FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY AFTERNOON
FOR ALL HAWAIIAN ISLANDS...

* WHAT...The possibility of flash flooding caused by excessive
rainfall.

* WHERE...All of the main Hawaiian islands.

* WHEN...From midnight HST tonight through Monday afternoon.

* IMPACTS...Flood prone roads and other low lying areas may be
closed due to elevated runoff and overflowing streams. Urban areas
may receive more significant flooding and property damage due to
rapid runoff. Significant flooding may occur due to the overflow
of streams and drainages. Roads in several areas may be closed,
along with property damage in urban or low lying spots due to
runoff. Landslides may also occur in areas with steep terrain.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- A kona low will develop north of Kauai late tonight and drift
southwest Sunday before moving to the west Monday.

Deep moisture within an increasingly unstable environment
will spread across all islands. Thicker offshore cloud bands
caught up within southeasterly to southerly winds will
produce periods of moderate to locally heavy rainfall and
possible isolated thunderstorms as these bands come onshore.
For Big Island and Maui County, the greatest flood risk
remains along southeast facing mountain slopes as southerly
flow more efficiently lifts rich moisture up these slopes.
Locally heavy rainfall across Oahu and Kauai will also
increase the threat for flooding during the watch period.

Lingering instability over some islands may extend the timing
of this Flood Watch into Tuesday.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.
