🚦 Exciting News for Buffalo Road! 🚦
The Borough has been awarded a $450,000 PennDOT Green Light–Go grant to fully reconstruct the Buffalo Road & Station Road intersection. With the addition of this award, every signalized intersection along Buffalo Road in the Borough will be reconstructed, bringing major improvements to safety, appearance, and long-term reliability.
These upgrades will modernize 45-year-old traffic signals, improve pedestrian crossings, and strengthen the Borough’s infrastructure for decades to come.
The Borough’s traffic signals are well past their useful life, (ordinarily 25-35 years). Replacement parts are increasingly difficult to obtain, and years of harsh Erie weather have taken their toll. Most importantly, these intersections require meaningful safety improvements—especially for pedestrians.
This $450,000 grant builds on an additional $1.15 million already awarded through PennDOT’s Green Light–Go Program for the other three Buffalo Road signals located at Bird Drive, Eastern Avenue, and Water Street.
PennDOT is scheduled to mill and resurface Buffalo Road (Route 20) in 2026. To ensure efficiency and coordination, the Borough will transfer the grant funds to PennDOT so the signal work can be completed in conjunction with the resurfacing project. PennDOT’s expertise in signal engineering, procurement, and inspections allows this work to be completed more efficiently, avoids duplicated efforts, and significantly reduces the burden on local officials.
Construction on the signal replacements is expected to begin in 2026. Due to equipment procurement and coordination, the fully reconstructed intersections are anticipated to be operational in 2027.
In addition, Borough officials are working closely with PennDOT to:
• Repair stormwater and sewer inlets and manholes that currently sit low relative to the road surface and create driving hazards.
• Re-evaluate traffic lane widths and layouts to improve safety and traffic flow. For example, on the 3000 block of Buffalo Road near Country Fair, exiting parked vehicles on the north side of the road can be dangerous. Shifting the double yellow line slightly south will provide more room to safely open vehicle doors. PennDOT has never conducted a detailed lane analysis in the Borough, and completing this analysis now will allow safer and more efficient traffic patterns to be implemented during restriping.
A Strong Year for Borough Grants
2025 was a very successful year for grant funding, including:
• $1.1 million – Bell Street Bridge (Water Street Corridor)
• $530,000 + $250,000 – Euclid Boulevard Reconstruction
• $125,000 – Euclid Boulevard Sewer Line Replacement
• $25,000 – Morrison Park Improvements
The Borough remains committed to pursuing every available funding opportunity to reinvest in infrastructure, improve safety, and ensure the community continues to be a welcoming and vibrant place to call home for the next generation.
Thank you to our local officials, state representatives, and partners who have worked hard to advocate for these investments and who helped direct taxpayer dollars back into our community. Our Borough is worth these investments, and the return—in the form of safety, infrastructure, and quality-of-life improvements—will be felt for years to come.
Cheers to 2026! 🎉
