Description
With winter weather here, the Borough of New Freedom would like to remind all property owners of their responsibility to help keep our sidewalks safe and accessible.

What you’re required to do:
• Clear snow and ice from the sidewalks adjoining your property within 24 hours after the snow or ice has stopped falling.
o If the snow stops after 6:00 p.m., you have until 10:00 a.m. the following day to clear it.
• Make sure the cleared path is at least 36 inches wide — wide enough for pedestrians and those with mobility needs.
• These responsibilities apply whether the property is occupied by an owner, tenant, or multiple occupants on a single property.

Please avoid:
• Depositing snow or ice on sidewalks, streets, or around fire hydrants.
• Piling snow where it blocks access or creates hazards for your neighbors or emergency crews.

If snow isn’t removed on time:
The Borough may clear the sidewalk on your behalf and charge the cost to the responsible party if the requirement is not met. In addition, violations of snow and ice removal regulations can result in fines and penalties.
