Crafton Borough, Tree Pittsburgh, Landforce Join Forces for Urban Trees

CRAFTON, Pa. (Nov. 21, 2025) – Three large historic trees along Broadhead Ave will be removed next week as part of a necessary sewer line replacement project. Classic Landscaping is pruning the trees this week, and full removal will take place over approximately three days next week, November 24-26.

Because of the trees’ exceptional age and size—estimated at nearly 200 years old—Crafton’s volunteer Shade Tree Commission acted quickly to advocate for responsible reuse. In collaboration with Tree Pittsburgh Senior Arborist Meg Cerveny, the Borough secured a plan to upcycle the wood rather than send it to a landfill.

Working with Tree Pittsburgh, Landforce, Urban Tree, and Merante Contracting, the logs will be transported to Landforce’s Responsible Wood Products program at The Mill in Wilkinsburg. There, they will be repurposed and transformed into usable lumber and biochar, directly supporting Landforce’s workforce development initiatives.

“This project shows a new option for municipalities,” said Ilyssa Manspeizer, CEO of Landforce. “Instead of losing legacy trees entirely, we can preserve their value and keep material out of the waste stream.”

Crafton, a certified Tree City USA and Bird Town Pennsylvania community, continues to lead on tree preservation and enhancing its urban habitat.
