Public Notification
• Information about mosquito spraying is distributed via press releases. Individual municipalities do not receive direct notifications.
• Michelle Poole requested that Red Lion Borough be notified directly via the general email address.
Mosquito Control Season
• The mosquito control season typically runs from April through October, as determined by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
• When DEP receives complaints, the County is notified and deploys gravity traps in the affected areas.
• Collected mosquitoes are tested for Jamestown Canyon Virus and West Nile Virus. Testing takes approximately 7–10 days.
• If test results are positive, truck spraying is initiated.
Spraying Details
• The truck spray uses approximately 1 oz. of AquaDuet (manufactured by Clark) per acre. It is water-based and remains airborne for about 30 seconds.
• Spraying occurs between 8:30 PM and 11:30 PM to target active mosquitoes while minimizing impact on non-target insects and birds.
Control Strategy
• The York County Mosquito and Tick-Borne Disease Control Program (YCMTBDCP) prioritizes larval control before resorting to truck spraying.
• Apiaries and other sensitive areas can register with Penn State. The sprayer automatically shuts off within 500 feet of registered locations.
• The sprayer also shuts off in response to traffic or human movement to ensure precise application.
Public Education and Prevention
• YCMTBDCP emphasizes public education to prevent mosquito breeding. Mosquitoes can mature from larvae to adults in just one week.
• Prevention is key. The program uses Vectobac G mosquito bits (dried corn with bacteria) and mosquito dunks to kill larvae. These products are safe for children, pets, and aquatic life.
• One mosquito dunk can treat over 100 square feet and remains effective for up to 30 days. These products are available for purchase online.
Ecological Role of Mosquitoes
• Mosquitoes serve as pollinators but are also known for spreading diseases, making control efforts essential.
