Cheswick Borough Officials want to alert residents, businesses, and commuters of the upcoming demolition of the former Cheswick Power Station's boiler house.
The demolition will occur on the morning of Sunday, March 2nd, 2025, time to be determined, as safety and final preparations permit. CPERG (Cheswick Power Station Property Owner), and B&B Demolition Company (Demolition Contractor) are handling the operation.
There will be no explosives used for the demolition; they will be using a cable pull technique to collapse the building.
The operation will necessitate extensive road closures and detours in and around the impacted area. The implementation of closures and detours will occur approximately one hour before the final preparations are started. Pittsburgh Street and Freeport Road will be completely closed from Murrayhill Avenue in Cheswick to Colfax Street in Springdale. Signs will be posted at the closures indicating alternate routes and uniformed police officers will be on hand to assist and direct the public accordingly.
Due to a heightened concern for safety, a safety perimeter will be established around the location. Please listen to the police and workers during the operation. No one will be allowed on any closed streets or public easements. This is being strictly enforced for everyone’s health and safety.
Individuals residing within the exclusion zone are not obligated to evacuate during the operation; however, we strongly advise and recommend that all residents in the exclusion zone remain sheltered in their homes during and for 30 minutes following the building's collapse.
Every street closed for this event will reopen as soon as the contractor gives the all-clear and all areas have been inspected.
The shelter-in-place area will encompass South Duquesne Avenue within the inclusion zone.
