Description
Lake Effect Snow Warning issued January 1 at 4:18AM EST until January 5 at 7:00PM EST by NWS Cleveland OH
* WHAT...Heavy lake effect snow expected. New snow accumulations of
12 to 18 inches through Thursday afternoon with intermittent lake
effect snow bands through the weekend that may bring totals up to
2 to 3 feet. The most favored locations for the highest snowfall
totals will be the higher elevation areas of southern and eastern
Erie County and northern Crawford County. Winds gusting as high as
35 mph.
* WHERE...Crawford, Northern Erie, and Southern Erie Counties.
* WHEN...From 7 AM this morning to 7 PM EST Sunday.
* IMPACTS...Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will
likely become slick and hazardous. Visibilities may drop below 1/4
mile due to falling and blowing snow. Travel will become very
difficult and should be postponed. The hazardous conditions will
impact travel during the typical morning and evening commutes from
Wednesday through Sunday.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Rain continues to switch over to snow across
Northwest Pennsylvania this morning with snow being favored in the
higher hills of interior Northwest Pennsylvania. Snow will lose
intensity across the area early this afternoon, as the low
pressure system departs the region, but snow showers should still
continue across Northwest Pennsylvania. The event will evolve into
a more traditional lake effect snow event this evening and
continue overnight into Thursday, bringing heavy snow bands and
higher snowfall rates. The lake-effect snow is expected to shift
north and become more concentrated on Erie County Thursday
afternoon and night before additional periods of lake-effect snow
return for Friday through weekend for all of Northwest
Pennsylvania.
If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in
your vehicle in case of an emergency.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Pennsylvania
Turnpike Commission strongly encourage motorists to heed all travel
restrictions and delay unnecessary travel. Visit www.511pa.com for
the latest travel, roadway, and traffic conditions.
Persons should consider delaying all travel. If travel is absolutely
necessary, drive with extreme caution. Consider taking a winter
storm kit along with you, including such items as tire chains,
booster cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothing.
Also take water, a first aid kit, and anything else that would help
you survive in case you become stranded.
During lake effect snow, the weather can vary from bands of locally
heavy snow to dry weather just a few miles away. Visibilities can
also vary greatly. Be prepared for rapid changes in weather,
visibility, and road conditions.
