Description
Sunday, September 29th Island Update - Please read for details on reopening, volunteers, curfew, meals, supplies, etc.
AS OF NOW: There is a curfew in place from 8 PM - 7 AM. Potable water for cleaning is available in the senior parking lot of Cedar Key School (971 Whiddon Ave, Cedar Key, FL 32625) and parking lot across from the Fire Station (434 First St, Cedar Key, FL 32625). You will need to bring your own containers to fill. We are working right now to get portalets installed across the island to provide restrooms and hand-washing stations to the public. CFEC is working diligently to restore power to the island (please see our post from yesterday for details). Access to the island is still limited to our passholders, at this time.
LOOKING FORWARD: We are hoping (emphasis on hoping) to re-open the island to all tomorrow morning (09/30). Parts of the island WILL be closed for public access due to dangerous conditions. Re-opening is contingent on the necessary infrastructure above getting installed today. Please keep an eye on the City of Cedar Key Facebook page and website (https://cityofcedarkey.org/) as they will officially announce re-opening when it is possible.
VOLUNTEERS: When the island opens, volunteers MUST go straight to the City Hall (809 6th St, Cedar Key, FL 32625). All volunteers must check-in at the City Hall to receive a wristband so that they are accounted for. This will be the case for EACH day following the bridge re-opening. At the volunteer check-in, you will have the opportunity to let us know what supplies/equipment/tools you have brought with you, and you will be assigned to assist a local home or business that needs your help.
FOR OUR HOME OWNERS & BUSINESS OWNERS: There will be a station at the City Hall once the island reopens to request clean-up/debris removal assistance from our volunteers.
MEALS & SUPPLIES: Over the following days, meals, supplies, and drinking water for residents and volunteers can be found at the First Baptist Church (717 2nd St, Cedar Key, FL 32625). Breakfast will be available each day as grab-and-go in the fellowship hall, lunch will be outside of the building from the hours of (12-2:30 PM), and dinner will be available at (5-7:30 PM). Please check the First Baptist Church Cedar Key Facebook page for further updates. There will be limited tools available to borrow at City Hall, as well.
Thank you all for your patience at this time. We are working overtime to ensure the island is safe to reopen.
