At 5:29am this morning, the fire department was dispatched to an explosion and fire on Dock Street in Cedar Key. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire in the building that housed Duncan’s on the Gulf Seafood Restaurant and the Rusty Hook Fishing Shop.
There were approximately 50 firefighters on the scene from throughout Levy County with mutual aid assistance from Citrus and Dixie Counties. The fire is now under control and no injuries have been reported. Firefighters continue to work to extinguish hotspots. Duncan’s, the Rusty Hook, the Island Trading Post and Steamers Restaurant all sustained very significant damage.
Cedar Key has suffered repeated serious disasters. First floods and now fire, but our city is resilient! We are #CedarKeyStrongest #NeitherFireNorFlood. Cedar Key is still open and we need you to come support our many small businesses.
The City of Cedar Key is actively working with local, county, and state officials to extinguish the remaining hotspots and begin recovery. We are working with the Coast Guard and Department of Environmental Protection to protect our natural habitat including waterways and shellfish farms. Mayor Sue Colson has signed a Disaster Declaration which will make resources available to assist in recovery.
At this moment, there are more questions than answers, but we are committed to working through the aftermath of this fire together. Cedar Key City Hall will be staffing an Information Hotline Monday – Friday from 8:30-4pm. The coming days will no doubt be a challenge, but Cedar Key knows how to come together and rebuild and we will do just that.
