Description
Columbia Gas has reported that they have had an accidental release of mercaptan in the Gabby area of North Franklin. According to the company, mercaptan is a harmless substance, that makes it easier to detect natural gas. In its natural state, natural gas is colorless and odorless. An odorant called mercaptan is added to natural gas as a safety precaution to give it a distinctive smell similar to rotten eggs or sulfur. The company stressed that while employees there have identified the source of the smell, if someone smells natural gas, they should still call the company.
