Description
After the First World War, the Pennsylvania Department of Highways created the Keystone Markers as a part of the Good Roads movement. The markers are a keystone shape and helped to cement the shapes association with Pennsylvania and the Commonwealth. Each marker features the name of a town, the distance to the next town, the derivation of the name, and the year in which it was founded.

Each town has at least two of these signs, and they are typically located at either end of its borders along major state roads. Some towns with intersecting major state roads may even have four markers installed.

The Newberry Township Keystone markers have been in storage since the 1970’s. In March 2022 at a Newberry Township Supervisors meeting, Dominish Marie Miller presented the idea of repairing them and then placing them back along the road. While not being placed in their exact original locations, the signs will be placed within a few yards, utilizing coordinates provided by PennDot.

Through a collaboration between Preserving the History of Newberrytown, Newberry Township, PennDOT, and the Keystone Markers Trust, one marker is ready to be installed in front of the Newberry Township building and police station located at 1915 Old Trail Road, Etters.
The marker will be installed on Monday, May 13th at noon. The media and the public are invited to observe the installation of the historic Keystone Marker and celebrate this effort in preservation.

Dominish Marie Miller, the founder of Preserving the History of Newberrytown, will be there on the day of the installation to take photographs. She can be contacted at dominishmiller@gmail.com or 717-514-1781

Attached are photographs of the Newberry Keystone Markers as seen in storage, before restoration.
