Public Health Alert: Mon Valley Air Pollution Watch (June 6)
A Mon Valley Air Pollution Watch has been issued for Tuesday, June 6. The forecast for the next 24 hours indicates that PM2.5 levels will likely exceed the 24-hour standard for the Mon Valley due to smoke from Canada’s wildfires.
Young children, seniors, and those with respiratory problems, such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis, are especially vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and should limit outdoor activities during this time.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has declared an Air Quality Action Day by issuing a CODE ORANGE for the Liberty-Clairton area and Allegheny County, as a whole. Northwesterly winds are transporting wildfire smoke from eastern Canada into Pennsylvania. Air quality monitors across northwestern Pennsylvania are already starting to see elevated readings of PM2.5 over the last few hours. This smoke will continue to move into the region on Tuesday and will likely contribute to elevated concentrations of PM2.5 for periods of time.
Companies contributing to pollution can contribute by temporarily reducing activities that produce emissions.
