York County Solid Waste Authority Announces Winners of High School Earth Day Recycled Art Contest

To promote recycling and celebrate “Earth Day” (April 22), the York County Solid Waste Authority sponsored a Recycled Art Contest for York County High School students. Participating schools included Christian School of York, Dallastown Area High School, Eastern York High School, Northern York County High School, Red Land High School, William Penn Senior High School, York Catholic High School, York Country Day School and York Suburban High School. Thirty-six students participated.

Contest judging and a public reception were held at the York County Agricultural and Industrial Museum at 217 West Princess Street in York on Thursday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m. Each student winner received an art supply gift certificate and his/her school’s art department was also granted an art supply gift certificate in the same amount.

First place was awarded to “A Tea Party in Excess” created by Maxwell McCormick of Dallastown Area High School. In second place was “Plastic Predator” created by Tracy McCoy of Eastern York High School. Third place went to “A Light in the Darkness” created by Wren Eberly of Eastern York High School.

Prizes were awarded based on artistic expression, use of recycled materials and level of technique. Judges were Frank E. Dittenhafer II of Murphy and Dittenhafer Architects; Justin Ruby, a freelance multidisciplinary artist from York County; and Rita Whitney, Director of Communications and Engagement at the York County Cultural Alliance.

Some of the students’ materials were generously donated by York County businesses, Re-Source York and LifePath Thrift Stores

Earth Day is a worldwide annual event celebrated on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. The first Earth Day, held in 1970, was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in, similar to a general education forum. In 1990 the event grew to the international level with 141 nations participating. Today, it is estimated that more than 192 countries continue to celebrate Earth Day each year.

This is the eighth year YCSWA has conducted a recycled art contest for high school students. YCSWA facilitates responsible solid waste management through an integrated strategy that emphasizes waste reduction, education, recycling, and resource recovery. YCSWA is the owner of the York County Resource Recovery Center, a Small Load Drop Off Facility, a Recyclable Materials Drop-off Center, an Ash Recycling & Processing Facility, an Education Center, and the closed York County Sanitary Landfill which hosts the Hopewell Area Recreational Complex.
