Description
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER

Borough of Edinboro Water System has elected to cease the addition of fluoride.

The Borough of Edinboro Water Authority has made the decision to cease the addition of fluoride into the drinking water system. This is not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know about this decision.

The practice of adding fluoride to public drinking water began in America in the 1940’s as a means of improving dental health. The introduction of fluoride into toothpaste and other oral care products in the decades since have eliminated the need for the addition of fluoride to the water supply.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in many water sources. Naturally occurring fluoride is found in the Borough’s water source at an average of 0.3 ppm (parts per million). This decision will cease the practice of introducing additional fluoride into the water supply, while the naturally occurring fluoride will remain.

While cost was not the deciding factor, the decision will also result in cost savings for the Water Department relating to the purchase of fluoride and the required lab testing cost.

We will continue the addition of fluoride into the drinking water system until the necessary modification is made to our DEP issued Drinking Water Permit.

Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water. This notice is being mailed to all water utility account customers.
