The Edinboro Area Historical Society is presenting a garden talk as part of HistERIE, a county-wide celebration of America's 250th Anniversary.
Society member Carol Klonicki will explain the historical significance of the Doucette House Museum's kitchen garden on Thursday, May 21st at 1:00 p.m.
Carol Klonicki is a certified flower show judge. She planned and planted the "kailyard" kitchen garden at the historic Doucette House in Edinboro as a representation of what such a garden may have looked like when the home was built, in 1861. Carol is fluent in the use of medicinal plants and knowledgeable about the herbs included in the garden. The garden, a potager or kitchen garden (also known as a kailyard, the Scottish term for a kitchen garden) has been Carol's brainchild for the past few years. Plots like this served as an apothecary, a perfumery and a spice rack for early American households.
The plants were used for health purposes, providing teas, tinctures and poultices.
The courtyard garden includes such well-known plants as Zinnia, Coneflower, Marigold and Columbine whose valuable uses most of us have no knowledge of. Other medicinal plants that most of us are not familiar with are Lamb's ear, Lady's Mantle, Salvia and Feverfew. Common herbs include Lavender, Tarragon, Chives, Bee Balm and Parsley. Many of these plants were used extensively by early settlers and pioneer families.
Carol's talk, a part of HistERIE's America 250PA weeklong community program, will be held on Thursday, May 21st and begin at 1:00 p.m. at the society's Doucette House Museum, located at 126 Water Street in Edinboro, PA. Visitors can find the Doucette House Museum on the corner of West Normal and Water Streets. Refreshments will be served.
